Queensland has introduced new smoke alarm legislation, and all existing homes, townhouses, units and manufactured homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed by 1 January 2027. If your home still has old ionisation alarms or standalone 9V battery units, they won’t meet the new standard.
To be compliant, smoke alarms must:
- Use photoelectric sensors, not ionisation
- Be interconnected, so every alarm sounds when one is triggered
- Comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014
- Be hardwired to mains power with battery backup, or powered by a sealed 10-year lithium battery
- Be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every storey of the home
